Major projects by the Corps of Engineers to prevent water erosion on coastlines have proved to be detrimental to other areas of the coast. Huge jetty construction merely moved sand and sediment to other locations causing increase current movement and rapid erosion and major loss of valuable land masses. Storm tides moved to more concentrated areas past the jetties and actually breached dunes and caused major damage to the bay areas not only affecting the land but the change in the brackish water condition greatly affect the bay side marine life as well.

Check out the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website regarding the subject matter. Hope this helps. A classic example would be flood control dams. The water retained behind them floods vegatation. Also paving large areas results in excess runoff ( the pavement/concrete does not allow the ground to absorb the water) that may erode or flood other areas.
