Scientists do not think that humans evolved from the apes that we have now. They think that humans and apes evolved from a common ancestor. The species diverged due to different capabilities. Humans are very adaptable. Apes are more restricted to a particular environment. Adaptable humans spread out throughout the world. Humans really took off once we developed language. We can teach chimpanzees and gorillas to use sign language (they cannot speak due to the shape of their voice box), but apes in the wild do not use language like humans do.

If you were descended from your parents, how come your parents didn't vanish when you were born?

It's the same question. Evolution says that humans and moden apes share a common ancestor. It does not say that apes "turned into" humans or any other such nonsense.

Evolution doesn't mean that all organisms of a species have to be converted into a new species .Only the animals which wish to live longer ,Stay fit ,and ready to change will wvolve .The other animals which do not wish to do so will reamain so .Of course they will stay back in the evolutionary cycle compared to the animals which have the guts to move ahead in the evolutionary cycle
